Boycott Britney Spears
I am big on boycotts. This is due to some (possibly misbegotten and overly optimistic) belief that they actually work. But some campaigns are beyond ridiculous, verging right into the realm of the delusional, in fact.
Like the Boycott Hollywood campaign.
I quote:-
We support President George W. Bush.
We support the liberation of Iraq.
We support this, and any action, taken in the war against terrorism.
We support our troops in Iraq, and around the world.
We are pro-peace, pro-freedom, pro-democracy.
We understand, that in order to attain and maintain peace and freedom, sometimes war is unavoidable
I suppose blind patriotism can stop you from seeing the glaring oxymorons in your manifesto.
Apparently the All-American folks down at Boycott Hollywood "oppose the statements made, ad nauseum, by the anti-war, anti-Bush celebrities from the left side of Hollywood." I suppose this partly explains the surrealist atmosphere at the last Oscars- if you looked closely you could almost see the gag put over Susan Sarandon's mouth. (Michael Moore doesn't count, he's not part of any part of Hollywood).
I understand the irritation caused by stars acting all political when all they should be doing is living decadence filled lives in their Bel Air mansions, filling their heads with nothing more than grade A Ecstasy and bathing in Evian. I mean, what has Bono done for Third World Debt anyway? But telling people that they should shut up just because there's a war on?
And they tell me that Joe Mccarthy* is dead.
Now, if there was a Boycott Britney Spears and Other Celebs Who Encourage 6 Year Old Girls To Look Like Paedophile Fantasy Barbie campaign however, I would be so there.
*Since it's been pointed out to me that not everyone is as geeky as I am and therefore may not understand my seemingly cryptic references, here's a short history lesson: Joe Mccarthy- US right-wing Senator who in the 1950s led the Hearings on hearings for the House Committee on Un-American (read: Communist) Activities, (thank you to geekier sis for correction), blacklisting a whole lot of Hollywood people deemed to be too friendly to the Left.
